Good for you, your pocket, and your Earth
Washable pads are not the ‘rags’ of your grandmother’s day! Modern reusable pads perform just as well (many will say better!) as their plastic cousins, but at a fraction of the cost.
A woman can use upwards of 10,000 pads and 15,000 daily liners over the course of her reproductive years, all going into landfill, or even worse, our sewers! This can cause major ecological damage (head to the about us page to read about the effects of putting the wrong things down our drains), not to mention the environmental cost of production.
Many women report lighter and less painful periods using washable pads as their bodies are not exposed to the chemicals found in the disposable variety. As your washable pads can last 5 years or more, you can also see the financial benefits versus 60+ months of buying disposable items.
The Pads Place stocks a range of New Zealand made pads to suit your needs:
Liners have a cotton top layer & bamboo terry core OR a bamboo velour layer and are designed for light, everyday absorbency. They come in 2 lengths: standard (20cm) and plus (24cm).
Light pads have a cotton top layer & bamboo terry core and are designed for light to regular menstrual flow. They come in 2 lengths: petite (20cm) and standard (24cm). They have an absorbency capacity equivalent to 1.5-2 regular tampons.
Regular pads have a cotton top layer and bamboo terry core OR a bamboo velour top layer and bamboo terry core and are suitable for regular to heavy menstrual flow. They come in 3 lengths: petite (20cm), standard (24cm) and plus (27cm). They have an absorbency capacity equivalent to 2-3 regular tampons.
All pads and liners have a quality waterproof PUL back layer to protect your clothing, and wings with snap closure (don’t worry, you won’t notice it’s there!) for ease of use. Use on their own, or, if you’re not ready to fully make the switch, in conjunction with tampons or a menstrual cup.
My design means they sit flat on the underwear, rather than the more common ‘wrap around’ style, so less risk of leakage. They are a simple wash and wear system, meaning no bits to put together or inserts to fiddle with.
